I'm hoping you all can help me, as I'm finding conflicting information via Google. Today while walking home I happened upon a very-decayed cat by the side of the road - mostly bones, with a bit of the hide and bits of tendon still sticking in places. Fortunately, we were near some restaurants and I manage to get some latex gloves and a plastic bag, and went to work pulling all the bones out of the mess and collecting them in the bag (including the entire spine in one piece, it was beautiful).
So, now what? I hear boiling them can just cause the grease to sink into the bone, discoloring it. On
this page the guy just went through a process of burying it in compost, soaking it in hot water and detergent several times, then hydrogen peroxide, the sun-drying it. Is that enough? I don't know if I really need a burying stage for these bones, as they are mostly bare and what little bits of flesh still cling can be easily pulled off with a small knife (I did some of that on-site as I collected them). All I want is to eventually display the skull, and use the bones in the jewelry work I do - so they need to be clean and as white as possible. Any tips?
(Also, right now I'm just storing the bag of bones in the garage since I didn't want the heat/humidity of the house to start causing an odor situation, hoping that will be okay for a day or two.)
